Land Acknowledgement

I would like to acknowledge the sacred land on which I live. It has been a site of human activity for 15,000 years. This land is the territory of the Huron-Wendat and Petun First Nations, the Seneca, and most recently, the Mississaugas of the Credit River. This land is subject to the Dish with One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, an agreement between the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and the Confederacy of the Anishnaabek and allied nations. The Dish with One Spoon Covenant demonstrates our collective responsibility to care for, and share, the land and its resources. I am here because this land was, and is, occupied. It is important for me to recognize this colonial history and present, to respect Indigenous Elders and Ancestors and the stewards of this land, honour my responsibilities to the land, and recognize that we are all treaty people. Today, the meeting place of Toronto is still the home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island and I am grateful for the opportunity create a virtual space while body occupies space on this territory.
